Frequently Asked Questions

Q. Why do I need a doormat ?
A. Dirt, mud and moisture tracked in from outdoors can damage your home, your health and your floors. It can mean having to sweep, vacuum, and mop the floor more frequently than you might otherwise need to. The DOORMAT though often overlooked, is your first line of defence against all this muck being tracked into your home. It is far less expensive than doing up your home again or treating illnesses or replacing damaged floors.

Q. I have multiple entrances for my home/office. Do I need a doormat for each entrance ?
A. Use a doormat for all entrances. Depending on your living situation, you may have doors to the back or side of the home in addition to just the front. Make sure all your entrances have doormats. Also, use a doormat at the doorway that leads to messier or unfinished areas such as a basement, utility, work area or garage.

Q. Do I need more than one doormat for one entrance ?
A. Having two mats one outside and one inside a door is ideal. It simply gives you a second chance to catch whatever is on the bottom of footwear. Try to mat at least four steps. Use longer mats or place mats length wise inside so that most people who enter will end up stepping on each mat at least once with each foot.

Q. Are there different mats for the outside and the inside ? Do I choose mats according to whether they will be outdoors or indoors ?
A. Yes outdoor mats and indoor mats vary according to make, function and use.

Typical outdoor mats are sturdy, hard wearing with stiff fibers, or with a bit of grit or surface roughness in it to remove and trap large debris or open holes to drain out excess water or moisture. Choose outdoor mats that are designed as such, built to take weather and temperature changes. If outdoor mats will be placed in an uncovered area, choose an open style that will drain out water quickly.

Typical indoor mats are supple, flexible with soft cut or loop pile structures that clean out fine dirt as well as absorb excess moisture tracked in. Indoor mats ideally should have a soft touch with fibers that will absorb moisture. They should preferably have an anti-slip backing.

Q. What size of doormat should I buy ?
A. Mats should not only function well but also enhance the appearance of the home. They should be big enough to fit the size of the door. For example, extra-wide and extra-long varieties are available for French doors. Industrial door mats may not look as stylish as door mats designed for home use, but they are very heavy duty and durable, and they do a very good job.

Use them at home for a mud room, garage, or side or back entrance if you don't want them at your main entrance. A larger doormat simply gives you a bigger chance to stop dirt from entering your home.

Q. Are doormats launderable ? Can they be cleaned in a washing machine ?
A. Yes you can choose launderable doormats. Surfaces made from highly absorbent cotton, polyamide or nylon with a backing of vinyl, eco latex or nitryl rubber are available which can be cleaned in the washing machine and reused as good as new. Ensure the mats are completely dry before reuse. Ensure the mats are washed separately in the washing machine. Ensure manufacturer's washing and care instructions are followed closely.

Q. What are other factors in my choice of a doormat ?
A. 1. Choose a doormat to make a style statement
2. Choose a doormat to decorate your entrance
3. Choose a doormat according to traffic through the door
4. Choose a doormat that performs its primary function - prevent dirt from entering the door

Q. How do I clean my doormat ?
A. Clean your doormats periodically. It is possible for doormats to get so full of dirt, debris, or moisture that they are no longer functional. Mats work best if they are cleaned regularly.

Follow the manufacturer's instructions:
1. Shake, vacuum, or sweep out loose debris. If the mat is fairly dry, this may be all you need to do. Occasional wet cleaning will do no harm

2. Launderable mats can be cleaned in a washing machine and then dried

3. Spray down outdoor mats with a nozzle on a garden hose

4. Make sure the mat is fully dry before reuse

Q. Any other tips ?
A. 1. Remove your shoes when entering your home, especially if you have been out in mud, or other heavy soil

2. Clean the spaces outside your doors and install hard walkways

3. Industrial door mats may not look as stylish as door mats designed for home use, but they are very heavy duty and durable,
and they do a very good job. Use them at home for a mud room, garage, or side or back entrance if you don't want them at your
main entrance

4. If possible, direct traffic through a mud room, garage, or other space designed to withstand and prevent heavy soil during rain or snow

5. Carpet samples don't do as good a job as doormats. They end up damaging your home. They're not large enough or hard enough to catch dirt and they're often chemically treated to render them less absorbent

6. If your entrance gets such heavy traffic that the mat gets too wet to capture all the moisture coming in on rainy days (as often happens in shops and businesses), get a larger or more absorbent mat, or get multiple mats so you can put down a dry one as and when the previous one gets saturated

Q. Any extra tips or caution in choosing doormats ?
A. Replace mats that won't stay flat and mats that slide. Choose doormats with good traction. Mats with deep, open holes can catch heels and make for an uneven walking surface. Mats made of plastic materials with very hard bristles and brush like surface do not do a good job of taking dirt , moisture and debris off footwear.

Q. Will doormats on their own keep my home clean ?
A. Door mats can catch a lot of dirt and debris before it gets in, but not against dirt and debris generated indoors. Floors will still get dirty eventually. Sweep, mop and vacuum as necessary to keep homes in top condition. Care for your doormat so it can care for and protect you.
